Before You Spend a Dollar on Ads, Find Out If Anyone Actually Wants This

Two store owners start the same product. One has already sold a few units with no ad spend at all, just through referrals. The other hasn’t sold anything yet and already wants to invest heavily in paid traffic. The first one is holding information worth more than any campaign about to launch.

Whether a product meets a real need can be checked before any heavy investment in store structure or paid media. Selling organically, even a little, is a more reliable signal than any projection: if someone bought and recommended it to a friend with no paid stimulus behind it at all, that’s real desire showing up on its own. Reading the one- and two-star reviews of established competitors in the same niche, and organizing the most repeated complaints, points directly at where there’s room for a better product or better support.

Validating with a small group from the actual target audience follows a specific order: first confirm the person has the problem the product intends to solve, then ask whether they already look for some solution today, and only then ask if they’d pay for a better one. Showing the product before those questions distorts every answer that follows. Asking friends and acquaintances “what do you think of my idea” tends to produce kind answers rather than honest ones; a stranger from the real target audience, with no personal tie to the person asking, gives a more reliable read.

None of these three signals, organic sales, gaps in competitor reviews, direct validation, guarantee success on their own. Together, they raise the odds that the next investment, in store and in ads, has real demand underneath it.

Flow Border supports stores once that demand is confirmed and ready to scale internationally.
