An Upsell Works Best When It Solves a Need the Main Product Just Created

An upsell works best when the offered product genuinely complements what the customer is already buying, not when it’s simply another catalog item placed in front of them with a discount attached. Listing, for each main product, the accessories or items that actually improve the experience of using it, a travel case for a sleep mask, for instance, rather than defaulting to whatever else happens to be in stock, is what separates an upsell that converts from one that feels like an afterthought.

Testing that complementary item with a real discount at the moment of purchase and measuring the acceptance rate shows whether the pairing actually lands. A low acceptance rate doesn’t necessarily mean upsell doesn’t work for that product. It often means the offered item isn’t complementing it obviously enough in the customer’s own perception, which is worth revisiting before abandoning the upsell for that product altogether.

Expanding this complementary model across the rest of the catalog, starting with the pairs that have the most obvious relationship, raises average order value consistently without ever feeling like a forced sale.

Flow Border supports stores building upsells that feel like part of the purchase, not an add-on to it.
