The Goal Keeps Moving Like a Horizon. Measure How Far You've Walked Instead

Walking toward the horizon never brings it closer, because it moves along with you. Business goals work the same way for a lot of founders: as soon as one target is set, the next is already forming past it, and the habit of measuring only the distance to that number generates a permanent feeling of falling behind, no matter how much the business has actually grown.

Looking only at the gap, what’s still missing to hit the goal, keeps attention locked on the shortfall even during months of real growth, since the number not yet reached never stops being the only thing in view. Measuring the game alongside it, how far the business has come from its actual starting point, initial revenue, the first customer count, the team’s original size, changes the read on the exact same result without changing the result itself.

Applying this means stopping periodically, once a quarter as a reference point, to compare the period’s starting position against where things stand now, documenting what actually changed rather than just what’s still short of the annual target. Writing those numbers down makes the comparison concrete instead of a vague impression that fades under the pressure of the next goal already looming.

None of this means abandoning goals or lowering the bar. The goal still exists and still sets the direction. What changes is that it stops being the only lens for judging whether the work is paying off. The gap will always be there. The game is the actual proof of what’s already been built, and that proof is what sustains the energy to keep going.

Flow Border helps founders track that progress with real order data, not just a moving target.
