On Your Site You Choose the Customer. On a Marketplace, the Customer Finds You

A seller opening on a marketplace for the first time often discovers a volume of customers who never showed up on their own site, and wonders where that audience was hiding. The answer isn’t the product’s quality. It’s that a store’s own site and a marketplace run on opposite traffic logics entirely.

On a store’s own site, the brand has to actively choose who to appear in front of, through a paid campaign targeting a profile it believes has interest, often before that person even knew they wanted the product. The purchase decision then depends heavily on how much trust the brand manages to build in that first contact. On a marketplace, the order flips: the customer already arrived determined to find something specific, typed the search term themselves, and the product surfaces because it matches what they were already looking for. The seller isn’t convincing anyone to develop interest from scratch, just needs to show up well positioned inside a search that already exists.

That difference explains a specific type of customer: someone who trusts a well-known marketplace’s environment, its exchange guarantees, delivery reputation, established track record, more than any specific brand’s own site, even with no idea who manufactures the product. That customer wouldn’t buy directly from an unfamiliar site. They buy without hesitation inside the marketplace. Selling only on a site means reaching whoever the campaign managed to convince. Selling only on a marketplace means depending entirely on whoever was already searching that exact term. Running both channels at once means capturing both audiences instead of choosing between them.

The right question isn’t which channel performs better. It’s which type of customer each one reaches, since site and marketplace aren’t really competing for the same audience at all.

Flow Border supports stores selling across both channels, wherever the fulfillment needs to keep up.
