No Tracking Tool Sees a Friend's Recommendation. Ask the Customer Instead

No tracking tool captures everything. When someone hears about a store through a friend’s recommendation, a comment on a video, or the memory of an ad seen days before without ever clicking it, that path usually doesn’t show up in any report. Asking the customer directly, right after the purchase, how they found out about the store surfaces a part of the journey that technical tracking will never see on its own.

Adding a simple question right after checkout, with clear answer options, is the mechanism, and including options tracking normally can’t capture, a friend’s recommendation, a comment on someone else’s video, remembering an ad seen before without clicking, is what makes the question actually useful rather than redundant with what the ad platform already reports. Comparing those survey answers against what the ad report shows as each sale’s origin, looking specifically for large divergences between what the customer says and what the platform attributes, is where the real insight shows up.

A big gap, many customers citing a friend’s recommendation while the platform credits everything to a single ad, signals a real influence channel being ignored in investment decisions simply because it never earns credit inside the platform. Human memory has its own limits, though, which means this survey works best as a complement to technical tracking, adjusting the reading of which channels actually matter rather than replacing the report outright.

Flow Border supports stores understanding the full customer journey, not just the part a pixel can see.
